The Gold’s Gym/Karl Rove Debacle

I went down to Gold’s Gym to cancel my membership yesterday after I heard the news of TRT Holdings’s unconscionable donation to Karl Rove.  I arrived as the following email came to the gentleman at the desk.

“The following article is circulating about the CEO of TRT holdings, which owns Gold’s Gym Corporate. It is vitally important in any discussion with our members to convey the truth about this situation. Our four gyms are locally owned and operated. We have no relationship or control over TRT holdings that purchased Gold’s Gym International a few years ago.

It is critical that you discuss the facts of this situation. We are a local, family run business. A large percentage of our employees are members from the LGBT community. Our company works tirelessly to support the LGBT community with financial donations to almost every major local LGBT charity. We are sponsors of the Academy of Friends, Folsom Street Fair, ALCs Riders, SF AIDS Foundation, PAWS, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center, Maitri, SF PRIDE and many many more.

Gold’s Gym San Francisco has long been a pillar of the gay community. We will continue to be. It is unfortunate that the CEO of TRT holdings has chosen this course of action. We do not support it in any way. Our obligations to Gold’s Gym International are up in less than 2 years and we are going to seriously explore our options.

Our company has worked for over twenty years to support our LGBT staff and members in every way possible and we will continue to.”

I decided to keep my membership for the time being.  Make your own informed decision.  Just remember that these are people, not just symbols or businesses.  I know it can feel good to make dramatic gestures, but if they can do more harm than good in the long run.
